Slovak Living Abroad Certificate

Your Gateway to EU Citizenship

The Slovak Living Abroad Certificate allows individuals to obtain Slovak permanent residency based on their ancestors' Slovak ethnicity, irrespective of immigration status, generation, or place of birth. This is an important step in obtaining EU residency and eventual citizenship for those not eligible for CBD.

About SLA

What is SLA, and how does it differ from CBD?

SLA stands for "Slovak Living Abroad", and it entitles the holder to permanent residency, and after just three years of physical residency in Slovakia, you are eligible to apply for Slovak citizenship. Unlike CBD, there is no generational limit and the location of your ancestors' birth is not relevant. There is also no language requirement associated with SLA, or citizenship under SLA after your three years of physical residency.

SLA is not only an excellent option for families where some family members are eligible for CBD, and others are not, but also for families and individuals who are not eligible for CBD at all because of where their Slovak ancestor was born.

Slovakia is widely considered a great place to live because it combines an affordable European lifestyle with strong access to nature and a highly convenient location in the heart of the continent. The cost of living is relatively low compared to Western Europe, with housing, groceries, transport, and leisure activities all significantly more budget-friendly, allowing residents to enjoy a comfortable standard of living without the high expenses seen in neighboring countries like Austria or Germany.

At the same time, Slovakia offers an impressive natural environment: from the dramatic peaks of the High Tatras to national parks, caves, rivers, and forests, it is a

paradise for hiking, skiing, cycling, and other outdoor activities year-round.  Its central location in Europe is another major advantage, making it easy to travel to major cities like Vienna, Prague, and Budapest within just a few hours, which adds a lot of flexibility for work, travel, and culture.  Overall, Slovakia balances affordability, safety, and quality of life with rich nature and outdoor recreation, all while offering the connectivity and convenience of a well-positioned EU country.
